A few years ago, the folk singer Tom Rush released an album that included some disparaging comments about the Chinese crested dog. He may now find the gumption to walk them during the day, in Moose or anywhere else in the country. The breed has a newly discovered heritage: Scientists reported Tuesday that the Chinese crested dog is one of a handful of breeds that trace part of their ancestry to the first dogs to populate the Americas 10, or more years ago.
Like most inhabitants of the United States, these dogs, together with most American pet pupperstrace their genetic past to much older parts of the world, like Europe and Asia. The New World Dog, they explain in the Cell Reports paper, is thought to be a subspecies of dog that ancient humans the ancestors of Native Americans brought to the Americas over the Bering Strait from Europe and Asia some 15, years ago, when a land bridge connected the continents. While some archaeological evidence had shown that these all-American pups did exist historically, researchers always thought they were eventually outcompeted by dogs that arrived from the Old World.
The Chinese Crested Dog is a hairless breed of dog. Like most hairless dog breeds, the Chinese Crested Dog comes in two varieties, with and without fur, which are born in the same litter: the Powderpuff and the Hairless. At first look, the Hairless and Powderpuff varieties of Chinese Crested Dogs appear to be two different breeds, but hairlessness is an incomplete dominant trait within a single breed.
An extensive genomic map of dog breeds -- the largest to date -- published today provides the first DNA evidence that dogs crossed the Bering land bridge alongside ancient humans, and it also will help veterinarians and researchers identify disease-causing genes in both dogs and men. There are approximately separate breeds of purebred dogs worldwide. A purebred dog is considered to be one whose genealogy is traceable for three generations within the same breed. Other countries also have systems for registering purebred dogs.
Then a hairless dog may be perfect for you. These exotic, elegant breeds have been favored by artistic types with a touch of rebellion in their souls. Bare skin requires protection such as sunscreen to prevent sunburns, jackets for warmth and regular baths to keep the skin healthy.
The AKC has grouped all of the breeds that it registers into seven categories, or groups, roughly based on function and heritage. Breeds are grouped together because they share traits of form and function or a common heritage. A toy dog, fine-boned, elegant and graceful.
The Xolo also comes in a coated variety and coated and hairless can be born in the same litter. It is characterized by its sparse hair coat and a severe oligodontia. This phenotype is a consequence of Canine Ectodermal Dysplasia caused by a mutation on the Foxl3 autosomal gene.
All rights reserved. The xoloitzcuintli gets its mouthful of a name from two words in the language of the Aztecs: Xolotl, the god of lightning and death, and itzcuintli, or dog. To the ancient Aztec and Mayaman's best friend was also a hairless, ugly-cute healer, occasional food source, and, most importantly, guide to the Underworld.
